Car Garage Equipment List for Starting a Workshop in India 2026
If you are planning a car workshop, the equipment budget is the part that keeps you awake. It is the biggest line in the plan, the choices are confusing, and nobody wants to spend lakhs on a machine that sits idle for six months.
The honest answer to “what equipment do I need?” is that it depends on what you want to earn from first. This guide gives you a car garage equipment list in stages: what to buy for your first bay, what to add when the work grows, and what to hold off on until you have the customers and the training.
Quick answer:- For a first multi-brand service bay, buy a two post lift, a diagnostic scanner, an air compressor with an impact wrench, a battery tester, an AC gas recovery machine and basic cleaning and handling equipment. Add a tyre changer and wheel balancer next, then wheel alignment. Leave body shop and EV equipment for when you have the work and the training.
Before you buy anything three questions
- What will you earn from first? General service and repairs, tyre and alignment work, body repair, or EV servicing each need a different core kit.
- How many bays can your space hold? Count the usable floor, the ceiling height and the room around each lift for doors and trolleys.
- Can your site support the machines? Check the floor strength, the power supply (single phase or three phase) and your compressed air capacity.
Stage 1 The equipment for your first bay
This is the kit that earns money from the first week.
Equipment | Why you need it | Our option |
|---|---|---|
Car lift | Almost every job needs the car raised safely | TPL-800 BP two post lift (4 ton, base plate, no overhead beam) or the TPL-800 CF |
Diagnostic scanner | Modern cars cannot be serviced properly without one | |
Air compressor | Powers impact wrenches, tyre tools and air tools | |
Air impact wrench | Speeds up every wheel and bolt job | |
Battery tester | Battery checks are frequent, quick jobs | |
AC gas recovery and recharge machine | AC service is a regular job in hot weather | |
Vacuum cleaner and car washer | Customers judge a service by a clean car | |
Jack and crane | Moving engines, parts and heavy components |
If you want to compare lifts in more detail, see our lifting equipment range, which also includes a four post lift and a portable scissor lift.
Stage 2 Add a tyre bay
Tyre work is steady, quick and easy to sell, which is why many new workshops add it early.
- Tyre changer: The TITR-1224 and TC-940 suit cars and SUVs, and the TTC-800 is built for commercial vehicles. See all tyre changers.
- Wheel balancer: The WBD-1050 video graphic wheel balancer completes the job. Buy it together with the tyre changer, because a freshly fitted tyre should always be balanced. See all wheel balancers.
Check your air supply first. The TC-940, for example, is rated for 0.8 to 1 MPa operating pressure, so your compressor has to keep up.
Stage 3 Add wheel alignment
Alignment is a higher-value service, but it needs a proper setup and a trained technician.
- A 3D wheel aligner (the TM-90) for cars, or a truck wheel aligner if you service commercial vehicles.
- An alignment scissor lift to hold the car level while you work.
- Genuine alignment spare parts and accessories so a worn clamp does not stop the machine. Browse all 3D wheel alignment equipment.
Stage 4: Specialist work, when the work is there
Body shop If you plan to take on denting and collision repair, you will need dent pullers, a MIG welder and a spot welder. See all body shop equipment.
Diesel work If you see many diesel cars with blocked filters, a DPF cleaning machine adds a service that many workshops cannot offer.
EV service Electric vehicles are arriving in more workshops, but they need proper training and safety gear first. Start with EV PPE kits, insulated hand tools, gloves and shoes, and an EV fire blanket. Add the EVBP-1000 battery pack lift and LAUNCH battery equalizers such as the EVM 324 only when you have the customers for them. See all EV battery maintenance equipment.
Starter equipment lists by workshop type
Workshop type | Start with |
|---|---|
Multi-brand service workshop | Two post lift, scanner, compressor and impact wrench, battery tester, AC machine, cleaning and handling equipment |
Tyre and alignment shop | Tyre changer, wheel balancer, 3D wheel aligner with alignment lift, compressor, impact wrench |
Denting and body shop | Dent pullers, MIG welder, spot welder, a lift, a compressor |
EV-ready workshop | PPE and insulated tools, fire blanket, scanner, battery pack lift, battery equalizer |
Fleet and commercial vehicle garage | Four post lift, heavy-duty tyre changer, truck wheel aligner, jack and crane |
The site checklist most buyers forget
A good machine on a bad site is a bad purchase. Before you order, check:
- Floor: A two post lift puts its full load on a few anchor points, so you need solid, cured, uncracked concrete. Ask the manufacturer for the foundation requirement of your model.
- Ceiling height: Measure to the lowest beam, light or pipe, and compare it with the lift’s height at full rise.
- Power: Confirm single phase or three phase. Some of our lifts, such as the TPL-800 BP, list 220V and 380V options, so match your supply before ordering.
- Compressed air: Size your compressor for the machines that use it, such as tyre changers and impact wrenches.
- Space around each bay: Doors, trolleys and technicians all need room.
Mistakes that cost new workshops money
- Buying everything at once. Machines that sit idle do not pay back. Buy in stages and grow with your workload.
- Buying on price alone. A cheap machine with no spare parts or service support costs more in the end.
- Buying half a set. A tyre changer needs a balancer, and alignment needs a proper lift.
- Skipping training. Alignment, scanners and EV tools only pay back in trained hands.
- Ignoring the site. The floor, the power and the air supply decide whether a machine works well on day one.
- Buying a second-hand lift without checking it. A lift carries a car over your head, so only buy one with a full inspection and a safe history.
How to order? a simple process!
- Decide your workshop type and the first bay’s equipment.
- Check your floor, ceiling, power and air supply.
- Ask each supplier for datasheets, certificates, warranty terms and delivery times.
- Confirm installation, training and spare parts support in writing.
- Compare specifications first and price second.
- Place the first order for Stage 1, then plan Stage 2 when the work builds.

Frequently asked questions
What equipment do I need to start a car workshop in India? A first multi-brand bay usually needs a two post lift, a diagnostic scanner, an air compressor and impact wrench, a battery tester, an AC gas recovery machine and cleaning and handling equipment. Add a tyre changer and balancer, then wheel alignment, as the work grows.
Which equipment should I buy first? Buy what earns money every day first: a lift, a scanner and your air tools. Add tyre and alignment equipment next, and leave body shop and EV equipment until you have the work and the training.
Do I need a wheel balancer if I buy a tyre changer? Yes. A newly fitted tyre should be balanced, so the two machines are normally bought together.
Can I start a workshop with just one lift? Yes. Many workshops start with one bay and one lift, then add bays and equipment as demand grows.
Do I need three phase power? It depends on the machine. Some lifts list both 220V and 380V options, while heavy-duty machines may need three phase. Confirm the requirement for each model before you order.
How much does it cost to equip a car workshop? It depends on your city, the number of bays, the specifications and whether you buy in stages. Send us your list and we will quote the equipment for your plan.
Do you supply equipment to new workshop owners? We work with dealers, distributors and workshops across India. Call +91 9313135555 or send an enquiry through our contact page.
